Septic tanks are an area of off mains drainage that Below Ground Solutions specialise in. Our staff have been working within the drainage industry for many years, and become experts at dealing with bespoke situations.. We often get asked questions about septic tanks as we have a wealth of knowledge on the subject. Below are a few of the more commonly asked questions.
What is a septic tank?
A septic tank forms part of an off mains drainage system. Waste will enter the septic tank and be separated into solids and wastewater. The solids will remain suspended in the tank while the wastewater will be discharged/filtered into the ground via a soakaway/drainage field.
What is a soakaway?
A soakaway is a used in a drainage system to help filter waste water into the ground. Situated below ground water that has been treated (normally by a septic tank or treatment plant) will be pumped into the soakaway. The soakaway will slowly discharge the treated wastewater into the ground.
Where will the waste go?
Once the waste has been separated (into solids and wastewater) the wastewater will be discharged away from the septic tank and towards the soakaway.
What happens to the solids?
Once the waste has been separated and waste water discharged to the soakaway the solids will be stored in the septic tank until it is emptied.
How often will it need to be emptied?
Typically, a septic tank will need emptying every 12-18 months. Although different manufacturers recommend different periods of time.
Why do I need a septic tank?
A septic tank will typically be used as part of an off-mains drainage system. An off-mains drainage system is used when a connection to the public sewer is not possible.
